Russia Will Offer Consular Services in North Cyprus
On Wednesday, the Russian state news agency Tass stated that the Russian Embassy will provide consulate services to Russian citizens in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in Lefkoşa (Nicosia).
According to Tass, an official from the Russian Embassy pointed out that other countries, including the US, UK, Germany, Italy, and France, have offered consular services in the TRNC for years and stated that “We will start providing consulate services in the north of Lefkoşa very soon. Proceedings will be conducted regularly.”
However, Ersin Tatar, the President of the TRNC, stated in an interview with Gündem Kıbrıs Newspaper that "Russia did not have a request to open a consulate. There were attempts to open an office. There is already an office representing the UK. Having a Russian office is not inconvenient for us. There are a lot of Russians here. Of course, it is normal for them to open an office and settle transactions. It would be better if they opened it."
The outcome of a Russian Embassy in TRNC is uncertain at the moment, but the northern part of the island is home to about 50,000 Russians. With the opening of the Russian Embassy in North Cyprus, Russian citizens in TRNC will be able to handle their official transactions easily.
In addition, Northern Cyprus is a popular holiday destination for Russians with its scenic beauty, sea, and mild Mediterranean climate. That’s why Russia intends to start operating direct flights to Northern Cyprus from Russia soon to make transportation between the two countries more comfortable. A senior official in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus foreign ministry verified the decision.
